Over 50 and Loving my Band

Celebrating life today.  I will be 52 my next birthday (11/15) and I've been give a gift beyond measure in this band. My approvals and my surgery was so fast I know that God had his hand on me.   I have acheived my first and most important goal of driving my Diabetes into remission, and also losing all of the associated medications that the condition required me to take.  I have a son and a daughter and five beautiful grandchildren. I also have a most supportive and wonderful husband of 36 years who is on my side everyday.  My mother died at 61 from complications of diabetes and COPD. My grandparents all died from Diabetic complications and my father is bedridden now from it as well.   I prayed so hard that I could find something to help me beat this family curse...thank goodness I quit smoking 21 years ago...but the weight was something that was so hard for me to control.

April 20th 2008 my newest grandchild arrived...that little fellow only drove it home harder that I had to fix this issue or I wouldn't see him grow up..of course, this doesn't ensure anything...but at least it gives me that fighting chance to get a few more years...and that's all I can ask for...July 1st I had the band surgery...and I work it everyday.  Weight loss is wonderful too, but it's the hope for health that I am so grateful for...I can move so much better now and the neuropathy in my feet and legs is more managable now...there has been damage but hopefully it's stopped for now.

I am sending out a prayer for all of us this morning...may this day be good and our blessings many.....

Wow almost sounded like my life except I hadn't get diabetes yet.  Both my parents were diabetic both had COPD, both had heart attacks and both are dead.   I was on the way to all of those problems.   I know with the weight loss I have acheived in the last 10 months I have drastically reduced the chances of diabetes.
After I had sent in my paperwork I was approved in 11 days.........when I got the letter in the mail from the insurance company I was scared to open it thinking it would be a denial letter since it had came so fast.   I remember trying not to cry as I read the words "APPROVED"
I also have a husband of   33 years that has been supportive of my throught everything.
I feel so much better now then I have in years.
I hope this day will be good and you have many blessings too.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~   AIN'T  LIFE  GRAND        I hear you on the diabetes and getting rid of the meds.   That is the # 1 reason I had surgery.  I could not stay healthy, was afraid to look at the future if there was one.   So glad to hear from you.   Hope to hear more....    Millie

Lynn,
Thank you for the wonderfully uplifting post this morning.  Your family history is similar to mine and prompted my seeking out a surgical solution to the family curse too.  I have a son and daughter and welcomed my second grandchild in June.  I'm so pleased that all is working out so well.
Blessings and blissings,
I've noticed there is another Linda S. so I'll be CV Linda

Hello Lynn, it was so nice to hear your wonderful and sucessful story this morning. Things are similar to mine but not all.

My dad died at the age of 53 years (I was 15 at the time) of a heart attack. His first. He had a heart problem caused by smoking and also emphysemia. Well the emphysemia caused the heart problems. Mom had diabetes and it caused some problems and she also had Alzheimers. She died basically from renal failure caused by the diabetes. She was 82. She has been gone about 5 and a half years. I have a heart problem that my wls isn't going to fix but it is helping it. I am grateful for that. I have cardiomyopathy which is causing the heart to die. It is going at normal now, or at least normal for someone with the disease. I am no longer taking anything for the diabetes. I was takeing 5 shots a day and some oral meds too. The bs's were still out of control. I was put on a pump and that helped but I was taking the u500 insulin it. That is 5 times stronger than normal insulin. I was taking so much of it. Now there is nothing and has been nothing since 1 week before surgery. My back is doing better. There is so much wrong with it nothing is going to make it totally better but I am happy with what I have. I can now walk and that is better than what I was doing. My life is wonderful now and there isn't a day that I don't thank God for pointing me in the right direction. I owe it all to Him.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

Lynn,

Glad to know ya!  I am 54 and was just banded and can't wait for the results that you have had.  I was taking 2 diabetic meds before pre-op diet and surgery, now I am only taking Glipizide 5 mg in the am.  I am looking forward to the chance to stop all meds.  I already have more energy.

Will be looking for your advise as the days go by on food choices and daily living!

Congratulations on getting the lapband, I really do think you will do a good job with it. I have been banded for 2 1/2 years and it's the best thing I could have done for myself.

Hey guys I will be 50 next month, can I join you all over here????
